Certificates of Concentration

Students can further distinguish themselves by earning a Certificate of Concentration along with the JD degree, thereby demonstrating to potential employers a higher level of knowledge in a particular field of law.

Advocacy: Stetson Law is currently ranked No. 1 in Trial Advocacy by the U.S. News & World Report and has recently built a new, state-of-the-art Advocacy Institute. The Advocacy Community includes the Veterans Law Institute, the Institute for the Advancement of Legal Communication, and Social Justice Advocacy.

Criminal Law: Criminal law attorneys typically work as state or federal prosecutors, public defenders, private defense attorneys, and business counselors. Many sitting judges practiced criminal law before being elevated to the bench. Students interested in criminal law need to prepare by learning the doctrine and theory of criminal law and by developing critical trial advocacy skills.

Elder Law: The Center for Excellence in Elder Justice is an internationally recognized program. Students get the opportunity to participate in the premier Elder Law Inn of Court in the U.S., offering them access to some of the nation’s distinguished Elder Law attorneys, to attend the National Conference on Special Needs Planning and Special Needs Trusts, and to become editors for The Journal of International Aging, Law & Policy.

Environmental Law: First-year students have unique opportunities to participate in the Ecosystem Banking Workshop or the Jacobs Law Clinic, and to take Research and Writing II Environmental Law. They have access to distinguished environmental professionals who participate in special lecture series on campus, and have the opportunity to participate in prestigious international and national environmental law moot court and negotiation competitions.

International Law: International Law is designed for students who want to advance their studies in either private or public international law. It is a competitive program designed to admit no more than five students per year.

Social Justice Advocacy: Stetson Law leverages its strong Advocacy core  to prepare students to serve the causes that matter to them. Students choose elective courses with a career path in mind and get one-on-one mentoring and experiential learning opportunities.

Business Law: This concentration is to help prepare those students planning a career in business law, whether in litigation or transactional work, by ensuring that they take courses particularly applicable to business law; develop skills and knowledge outside of classwork relating to business law; receive mentoring from members of the faculty with experience and interest in business law; and recognize students who have demonstrated high degrees of ethics and competence in business law.
